New Delhi, February 20: The film ‘The Kerala Story 2‘, which addresses issues like love jihad and religious conversion, has sparked significant controversy following its teaser release. Political tensions have escalated, with both opposition and support emerging from various factions regarding the film.
Amidst the backlash, demands for a ban on the film have also intensified. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala has openly supported ‘The Kerala Story 2‘, targeting those who oppose it. He stated, “The same system that includes Congress and leftist parties, which typically claims to support freedom of expression and creativity, is now attempting to suppress creative voices.”
He further questioned, “What is the issue with films like ‘The Kerala Story’ or ‘The Kerala Story Part 2’? The first part revealed the truth about love jihad, acknowledged by both the church and the courts, yet they opposed it. Now, they are resisting a film that shows how radical forces exploit women and pose a threat to national security through forced conversions. Why not support it? What harm is there in revealing the truth? In the name of vote bank politics, the left and Congress, which sometimes align with Hamas and Jamaat, are prioritizing their interests over women’s rights.”
Uttar Pradesh Minister Narendra Kashyap commented that films like ‘The Kerala Story 2‘ bring societal truths to light. He remarked, “Forced conversions are against both the country and the Constitution, so opposing this film is wrong.”
However, opposition to the film is robust. Several prominent leaders from the Samajwadi Party and Congress have voiced strong objections and are demanding a ban.
Political analyst Tehseen Poonawala stated that the film fosters discrimination within society. He noted, “Whenever elections occur in opposition-ruled states or major national elections approach, such films tend to be released. I do not support banning any film; I believe every film or book should be allowed without restrictions. However, in the case of ‘The Kerala Story 2′, the filmmakers admitted before the Supreme Court and Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that they falsely claimed ISIS had abducted 30,000 girls. Therefore, films like this contribute to societal discrimination.”
V. Gurunadham, Vice President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, also expressed his dissent, stating that such films incite hatred between Hindu and Muslim communities. He added, “’The Kerala Story 2’ is crafted in a way that could escalate violence and discrimination between the two communities. This film is not for entertainment but for vote bank politics.”
Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra Mona has called for a ban on the film, asserting, “Stories and films related to religion or sensitive topics should be prohibited as they breed hatred and divide society.”
Meanwhile, SP MLA Sangram Singh remarked that the BJP is internally shaken and that no matter their attempts to create a communal atmosphere, nothing of the sort will happen in Uttar Pradesh.
