Imphal, April 6: Chief Minister Yumkham Khemchand Singh reiterated on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has played a vital role in safeguarding Manipur’s borders and interests.
While addressing the 47th foundation day celebration of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Rongmei village of the Noney district, Singh highlighted that it was PM Modi who declared in Parliament that Manipur’s territorial integrity would always be preserved.
He also credited PM Modi for transforming the Centre’s ‘Look East Policy’ into the ‘Act East Policy,’ aimed at opening the Trans-Asian Highway to Southeast Asian nations.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for assuring every possible support for the state’s development and the welfare of its people. He emphasized that the BJP is deeply concerned about the eight northeastern states.
Singh reminded attendees that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee established the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region for the growth of the hilly northeastern area.
The event took place at the Longmai Part-3 Multipurpose Hall in the Noney district headquarters, coinciding with Singh’s return from a three-day visit to the Jiribam district, which borders Assam.
Local BJP MLA Dipu Gangmei and Rongmei traditional dancers warmly welcomed the Chief Minister. Singh and state BJP President A. Sharda Devi hoisted the BJP flag at Longmai Common Ground, while attendees sang “Vande Mataram.”
Yumkham Khemchand Singh and eight BJP legislators paid floral tributes to the ideological founders of the BJP, Deendayal Upadhyaya and Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
Upon returning to Imphal from Jiribam, the Chief Minister received a warm welcome from women at Nupi Keithel 1 (Women’s Market-1). He prayed before the statue of Leimarel Sidabi and sought the goddess’s blessings.
Additionally, on Sunday, the Chief Minister and state BJP President addressed an election rally in Rongpur, supporting BJP candidates Rajdeep Gola and Milan Das, who are contesting from the Udharbond and Hailakandi assembly constituencies, respectively.
The Manipuri population is significant in southern Assam, including Cachar, Srimantapur (formerly Karimganj), and Hailakandi districts. Voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly will take place on April 9, with results announced on May 4.
The Chief Minister has spent two days (Saturday and Sunday) visiting the mixed population of Jiribam district, which borders southern Assam.
