
New Delhi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the Indian contingent participating in the Asian Games 2026 on Sunday. He praised the athletes for their determination, enthusiasm, and remarkable sportsmanship while representing the country.
India secured fourth place at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, amassing a total of 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze. This achievement marks the country’s second-largest medal haul in the history of the Asian Games.
On the social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “On the occasion of the conclusion of the Asian Games 2026, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each member of the Indian team who represented our nation with determination, enthusiasm, and remarkable sportsmanship.”
He specifically acknowledged the medal winners, stating their performances brought immense joy to the country.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that the achievements in Aichi-Nagoya would inspire even greater successes in the coming years and contribute to strengthening India’s grassroots sports ecosystem.
He added that he hopes these games will serve as motivation for future accomplishments and help bolster sports at the community level.
India’s campaign in Japan featured several historic milestones, including the successful defense of titles in various sports. Both the men’s and women’s cricket teams retained their Asian Games titles, while both kabaddi teams won gold medals. The men’s hockey team triumphed over Malaysia with a score of 5-1, successfully defending their title, and the women’s team ended a 44-year wait for an Asian Games gold by defeating China 1-0 in the final.
The country also witnessed remarkable individual performances. Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win an individual gold medal in golf at the Asian Games, while 17-year-old Kumkum Mohad made history as the first Indian woman to win an individual recurve gold medal in a continental competition.
Lovlina Borgohain joined an elite group by becoming the second Indian woman to win a gold medal in boxing at the Asian Games, following in the footsteps of Mary Kom.
In athletics, India led the medal tally with 24 medals, while shooting contributed 15 medals to the overall count. Archery emerged as the most successful sport in terms of gold medals, with five golds secured.
