New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government has made changes to an order concerning the assignment of additional duties to senior police officers in light of allegations of harassment against female journalists. This revision follows a request from Assistant Police Commissioner Vivek Bhagat.
On October 5, 2026, the government announced that twelve officers of the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service (DANIPS) were assigned the role of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police. However, the order regarding Bhagat is now being amended to reflect his request to refrain from taking on this responsibility until a thorough investigation into the harassment claims is completed.
The proposal to assign these additional duties was initiated on August 25, well before the recent allegations garnered public attention. The orders were issued only after receiving necessary approvals on October 5.
According to the order, the current assignments are temporary administrative arrangements. The officers involved will not receive any financial benefits, nor will they be permitted to assume the legal responsibilities typically associated with permanent positions.
Bhagat voluntarily requested to step aside from his duties concerning the harassment allegations until the investigation concludes satisfactorily. In response to this request, the October 5 order will be amended to apply only to the remaining eleven officers.
This development comes amid increasing scrutiny of the Delhi police following reports of alleged misconduct towards female journalists. Officials clarified that the original proposal was made prior to the controversy and emphasized that this arrangement is entirely temporary. A revised order is expected to be issued soon, detailing the decision to separate Bhagat from his responsibilities until the investigation results are available.
Officials reiterated that there are no financial or legal advantages associated with the temporary charge, indicating that its scope is limited. Further updates regarding the investigation’s progress or any subsequent administrative actions have not been provided. The government maintains that the process for assigning additional charges was conducted in accordance with established rules and timelines, independent of the recent allegations.
