New Delhi, August 10: The Commonwealth Games 2026 was a remarkable event for India. The nation secured a total of 39 medals, including 13 golds, in Glasgow, Scotland. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with all the athletes who won medals for India. During this meeting, he commended boxer Jadumani Singh for defeating a Pakistani opponent on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
While conversing with the athletes, PM Modi asked, “Who won on Kargil Day?” Jadumani responded that his fight on Kargil Vijay Diwas was against a Pakistani boxer and, being from the Indian Army himself, he was determined to win. He successfully defeated his opponent with a score of 5-0, dedicating his victory to the brave soldiers of Kargil.
PM Modi acknowledged Jadumani’s sentiments, stating, “Since you are from the Army, I truly believe that your gesture of dedicating this win or medal to the Kargil victors has added to that victory. You defeated the one you were meant to.” Jadumani Singh showcased an impressive performance in the 55-kilogram category, earning a silver medal. However, he fell short of gold, losing in the finals to Australia’s Jay Dixon.
Despite this, the performance of Indian boxers was memorable, with a total of 10 medals, including 7 golds, in boxing alone. Overall, India concluded the tournament in fourth place, having won 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. The performance was historic, even without events like shooting, badminton, hockey, and wrestling. For the first time, India secured 2 gold medals in judo, and Gulveer became the first athlete to win two medals in a single Commonwealth Games.
