PM Modi Highlights Fishermens Role in Building a Self-Reliant India

New Delhi, March 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the contributions of fishermen during the 132nd episode of his radio program, “Mann Ki Baat.” He discussed how the development of ports and the integration of modern technology are making life easier for fishermen and opening new avenues for innovation in the fishing sector.

Prime Minister Modi stated, “Our fishermen are not just warriors of the sea; they are also a strong foundation for a self-reliant India. They battle the waves before dawn, working tirelessly to strengthen both their families and the nation’s economy. Various initiatives, such as port development and insurance for fishermen, are significantly easing their lives.”

He further emphasized, “We understand that their activities at sea are greatly influenced by weather conditions. Therefore, we are providing full support through technology. I am delighted that these efforts are not only enriching our fishing sector but also instilling a spirit of innovation. Today, new innovations are emerging in fishing and seaweed cultivation, enabling our fishermen to become self-reliant.”

The Prime Minister shared inspiring stories, including that of Sujata Bhuyan from Sambalpur, Odisha. Once a homemaker, she ventured into fish farming at the Hirakud Reservoir to support her family. Despite facing numerous challenges, including weather changes and balancing household responsibilities, her determination led her to transform her efforts into a thriving industry within just a few years. Today, her success serves as a beacon of hope for women in her community.

Modi also highlighted the story of Hawwa Gulzar from Minicoy in Lakshadweep, who ran a fish processing unit. Recognizing the need for a cold storage facility to enhance her business, she decided to invest in one, which has since become her strength, allowing her to plan her operations more effectively.

The Prime Minister noted, “Across the country, inspiring initiatives are taking place. Shivling Satappa Huddar from Belagavi chose a different path from traditional farming by creating a pond farm. He received training for this venture and is now earning well from selling fish. With the rising demand for seaweed, many have also adopted seaweed farming, reaping significant benefits. I once again commend all those associated with the fishing sector for their commendable efforts to strengthen our economy.”
