PM Modi Emphasizes Water Conservation in Mann Ki Baat Broadcast

New Delhi, March 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of water conservation during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address on Sunday. He shared that over the past 11 years, 5 million water harvesting structures and 70,000 Amrit Sarovars have been established across the country. Modi also praised the inspiring efforts of villages in Tripura, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana in tackling water scarcity.

The Prime Minister noted that many regions are already experiencing the onset of summer. This is a crucial time to reaffirm our commitment to water conservation. The ‘Jal Sanchar Abhiyan’ has significantly raised awareness among the public, leading to the creation of approximately 5 million artificial water harvesting structures nationwide.

“I am pleased to see that communities are now taking initiative to combat water scarcity at the village level. Some are cleaning old ponds, while others are working to conserve rainwater. Under the Amrit Sarovar initiative, around 70,000 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed, and efforts to clean these reservoirs have already begun ahead of the rainy season,” he stated.

Modi highlighted the case of Wangmun village, located in the Jampui Hills of Tripura at an elevation of 3,000 feet. This village faced severe water shortages, forcing residents to travel long distances for water during the summer. The villagers decided to conserve every drop of rainwater. Today, nearly every household in Wangmun has installed rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, transforming the village into an inspiring example of water conservation.

In Chhattisgarh’s Korea district, farmers have implemented a unique initiative. They created small recharge ponds and soak pits in their fields, allowing rainwater to accumulate and gradually seep into the ground. More than 1,200 farmers in the area have adopted this model, significantly improving the groundwater levels.

Modi also mentioned the collaborative efforts in Mudhigunta village in Telangana’s Mancherial district. Here, 400 families constructed soak pits in their homes, turning water conservation into a community movement. This initiative has improved the village’s groundwater levels and reduced waterborne diseases caused by contaminated water.
