New Delhi, 2 January: The central government has refuted a false claim circulating on social media that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will stop dispensing ₹500 notes from ATMs by March 2026. The government has clearly stated that this information is completely false.

The government’s fact-checking agency, PIB Fact Check, posted on the social media platform X, stating, “Claims circulating on social media that RBI will discontinue ₹500 notes from ATMs by March 2026 are fake.”

The agency clarified that RBI has neither taken such a decision nor made any announcement regarding this matter.

PIB Fact Check also confirmed that ₹500 notes remain fully legal tender and are still in circulation. The public is urged not to trust such rumours and to verify any information from official government sources before sharing it further.

A similar message had gone viral on WhatsApp last August, falsely claiming that RBI had instructed banks to stop issuing ₹500 notes through ATMs by 30 September. At that time too, the government denied the news.

The fake message also falsely stated that by March 2026, 90% of ATMs and by September 2026, 75% of ATMs would stop dispensing ₹500 notes.

PIB Fact Check had then clearly stated that the central bank has not issued any such directive.

The fact-check unit warned that such misinformation is spread to mislead people. It emphasised that any economic or banking-related information should be verified only through government and trusted official sources.
