Patna, August 14: The debate over Bihar’s liquor ban policy has reignited, with leaders from various parties demanding a review of the law in place. This controversy escalated following a recent survey suggesting a reconsideration or repeal of the ban.
Jitan Ram Manjhi, the patron of the Hindustani Awam Morcha and a government ally, has advocated for strengthening the liquor ban based on the Gujarat model.
Independent MP Pappu Yadav, representing Purnia, has also backed Manjhi’s call for a reassessment of the liquor prohibition policy. He proposed changes in its implementation.
Speaking to the media after arriving in Patna from Delhi on Friday, Yadav stated that the government should review the current framework of the liquor ban instead of maintaining the status quo. He suggested that restrictions around schools and temples could remain strict, while different rules could be considered for five-star and seven-star hotels.
Yadav raised concerns about the economic impact of the existing liquor ban, claiming that Bihar is losing potential revenue. He pointed out that the illegal liquor trade has become a source of income for politicians, officials, and criminals.
He called for a comprehensive review to determine whether the current policy is achieving its intended goals.
Regarding reports of a legal notice sent to the agency conducting the liquor ban survey by the Janata Dal United (JDU), Yadav emphasized the need to respect Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s views on the ban. He argued that any law should be periodically reviewed to assess its effectiveness and unintended consequences.
According to Yadav, the government should evaluate both the benefits and drawbacks of the liquor ban and consider changes in its implementation if necessary.
