Jordan, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced early Wednesday that its aerospace forces targeted a US air base located in Jordan. This action was reportedly in response to what Iran described as “aggressive” assaults by the United States on Iranian oil tankers.
In a statement, the IRGC claimed it struck a hangar at the Al-Azraq air base used for the maintenance and deployment of US F-35, F-16, and F-15 fighter jets. Additionally, a shelter for these aircraft was also targeted. The IRGC asserted that the attack inflicted “heavy damage” on the enemy.
According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, Jordan’s military stated that its air defense systems intercepted 18 out of 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran. The remaining two missiles reportedly landed in uninhabited areas, causing no reported casualties.
Prior to this, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) had announced the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers. CENTCOM indicated that the IRGC had attempted to target a US warship with ballistic missiles on two occasions.
The US reported that these attacks occurred on Tuesday in the Gulf of Oman and near Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical hub for the country’s oil exports.
CENTCOM confirmed that the US warship remained unharmed during both alleged attacks over the past two days, with no injuries reported among American personnel.
The US military identified the tankers destroyed in the Gulf of Oman as the M/T Kavij, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon-1, and M/T Risko. The fifth tanker, M/T Derya, was targeted near Kharg Island.
Before the attacks, US forces had instructed the crews of these vessels to abandon ship, after which the vessels were struck to render them inoperable. The US military reported no casualties among the crew members.
CENTCOM characterized these vessels as operated by the IRGC, claiming they were part of a network used to financially support Iranian military entities and affiliated regional groups.
However, the US military did not specify which warship was allegedly targeted by Iran, the location of the attack, or the number of ballistic missiles fired. This marked the second military action by the US against Iranian tankers in four days.
