New Delhi, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), has raised concerns over Union Home Minister Amit Shah‘s announcement regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Owaisi asserts that the UCC would effectively impose Hindu laws on non-Hindus.
In a post on the social media platform X, Owaisi highlighted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had previously established a law commission that concluded the UCC is neither necessary nor desirable. He emphasized that the essence of India lies in its diversity, arguing that the UCC would lead to the imposition of Hindu laws on other communities.
He pointed out the irony in the BJP advocating for the UCC while simultaneously enacting laws like the Unrest Areas Act, which restricts property sales between Hindus and Muslims. Owaisi further claimed that the so-called “love jihad” laws have been selectively enforced against Christians and Muslims, stating that the UCC is not about equality but rather about targeting Muslims.
Owaisi also directed his remarks towards the BJP’s allies, urging them to assert their political independence rather than merely acting as a “mini BJP.” He recalled the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in 2019, attributing their occurrence to Amit Shah’s misguided arrogance and the government’s failure to clarify that there would be no National Register of Citizens (NRC).
He expressed concerns about the ongoing situation with the Special Investigation Report (SIR), where ordinary citizens are compelled to present documents for hearings, causing significant distress among minorities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and migrants. Owaisi warned that the NRC would be far more detrimental, recalling the devastation it caused in Assam.
He criticized the notion of requiring individuals to prove their citizenship in a country where 800 million people rely on rations for sustenance, questioning the rationale behind such demands from the government.
