Chennai, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : In Chennai, as the October 6 by-election approaches for the Madurantakam assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu‘s Chengalpattu district, the Election Flying Squad has intensified vehicle inspections. During these checks, officials have ordered the removal of political party flags displayed on various vehicles.
With the announcement of the by-election schedule, the model code of conduct has come into effect. Election officials and local authorities have begun dismantling posters, banners, wall advertisements, party flags, and flagpoles from public spaces across the constituency. The Flying Squad has also increased surveillance to prevent attempts to influence voters with cash, gifts, alcohol, or other inducements.
Authorities are stopping cars, vans, and other vehicles at designated points for thorough inspections. They are particularly looking for unaccounted cash, prohibited items, and election campaign materials, which could violate election regulations. During one such inspection, officials spotted political flags on vehicles and promptly ordered their removal. Only after the flags were taken down were the vehicles permitted to proceed toward Madurantakam.
Officials have assured that continuous checks and field monitoring will be conducted around the clock to ensure strict adherence to the model code of conduct. The Madurantakam by-election is one of the first significant electoral tests for Tamil Nadu. It comes at a time when the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, recently unseated the DMK government led by M.K. Stalin in the last assembly elections.
This outcome has significantly altered the political landscape in the state, establishing TVK as the ruling party. The shock deepened for the DMK when Stalin faced defeat in Kolathur, a constituency he represented and considered his stronghold. This loss has sparked intense discussions within the party about future strategies.
The Madurantakam contest is viewed as critical. It may indicate whether TVK can maintain its electoral momentum and whether opposition parties can reclaim lost ground. Political parties are gearing up for vigorous campaigning, while election officials remain focused on ensuring equal opportunities for all.
