Kolkata, April 7: Following the completion of the judicial review process for voters in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India (ECI) estimates that the total number of removed voters has surpassed 9 million. This process concluded just after midnight on Monday.
Although only a small percentage of cases sent for judicial review have been finalized with electronic signatures from judicial officials, the number of removed voters may slightly increase as the ECI finalizes its figures.
According to data from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, out of 6,006,675 cases sent for judicial review, the process for 5,984,512 cases has been completed, with electronic signatures obtained from judicial officials.
From this total, 2,716,393 voters were deemed “excluded” and thus “removed” by the judicial authorities, bringing the total number of removed voters in West Bengal to 9,083,345.
Before the notification for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was issued last November, the total number of voters in the state was 76,637,529. The draft electoral roll published in December last year saw the removal of 5,820,899 names, which increased to 6,366,952 in the final electoral roll published on February 28.
An official from the CEO’s office stated, “After 2,716,393 cases were found to be excluded by judicial authorities, the total number of removed voters in the entire SIR process has risen to 9,083,345. The process for electronic signatures in 22,163 cases is still pending. Once this process is completed, additional names may be added to the current number of removed voters.”
Voters whose names have been deemed “excludable” during the judicial review process will have the opportunity to apply for relief at one of the 19 appellate tribunals established for this purpose.
According to data from the CEO’s office, the highest number of cases found “excludable” during the judicial review process came from the minority-dominated Murshidabad district, with a total of 455,137 names removed. This was followed by North 24 Parganas with 325,666 names and Malda, another minority-dominated district, with 239,375 names.
The assembly elections in West Bengal will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Voting for 152 assembly seats will take place in the first phase, while the remaining 142 seats will be contested in the second phase. Results will be announced on May 4.
