Outrage Over Alcohol Brand Named Sangam Sparks Calls for License Revocation

Prayagraj, May 8: The sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, known as Sangam, has become a source of outrage among the Hindu community after an alcohol brand adopted its name. This revered site, a symbol of Sanatan Dharma, is now at the center of a heated controversy.

Jagadguru Ramanujacharya Swami Narayanacharya Shandilya Maharaj expressed his discontent during a conversation in Prayagraj, demanding the immediate revocation of the company’s license. He emphasized that Sangam is not just a name; it represents the identity of three holy rivers. The mere mention of Sangam evokes the sacred forms of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati in the minds of Sanatan followers. These rivers are revered as goddesses, and Prayagraj, known as the Tirthraj, attracts millions of pilgrims, especially during the Kumbh Mela, where over 660 million devotees come to collect Ganga water.

Using such a holy name for an alcoholic product is a direct affront to our faith, rituals, and the sanctity of these three deities. Local residents had previously urged that alcohol sales should not occur within a 5-kilometer radius of the Sangam area. The launch of the alcohol brand named ‘Sangam’ is seen as a grave oversight.

The Maharaj called on the Yogi Adityanath government to revoke the company’s license, blacklist it, and initiate strict legal action against those responsible. He warned that if necessary, a complete ban on the company should be enforced to prevent any future misuse of names associated with worship sites or sacred rivers.

He stated that Sangam embodies the soul, life, and breath of India, and any attempt to desecrate it will not be tolerated. He voiced strong opposition on behalf of the entire Sanatan community, warning that if the government fails to act promptly, the public may be compelled to protest.

Mayor Umesh Chandra Ganesh Kesarwani assured that action would be taken against any company attempting to produce alcohol under the name Sangam. Councillor Kusum Lata echoed this sentiment, stating that such actions are unacceptable.
