Mumbai, April 27: According to a recent report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is in the process of developing a smartphone that aims to deliver genuine Agentic AI capabilities. This device is expected to enter mass production in 2028, featuring on-device AI functionalities while offloading more complex tasks to the cloud.
Kuo indicates that OpenAI is collaborating with MediaTek and Qualcomm to create a custom chipset for this upcoming smartphone. Additionally, Luxshare has been named as the exclusive co-design and manufacturing partner for the device.

The smartphone is anticipated to depart from the conventional app-based user interface, opting instead for a “task stream” design. This new interface will provide a cohesive appearance, showcasing tasks and their statuses directly on the home screen. OpenAI plans to establish a novel agentic AI ecosystem, supported by third-party developers.
A notable point from Kuo’s insights is that the OpenAI smartphone will “need to continuously understand the user’s context,” suggesting an always-on feature at the chipset level. Furthermore, OpenAI is likely to bundle some of its AI subscription services with the smartphone.
