Chandigarh, March 5: Punjab’s Health Minister Balbir Singh addressed concerns regarding the tragic death of an Indian social media influencer in Canada, the plight of Indians stranded in Gulf countries, and the expansion of medical colleges in the state.
Minister Singh revealed, “Currently, many of our citizens are stuck in Gulf countries. Approximately one million people are stranded there. Some of them are from Patiala, and I received calls from them stating they have run out of money. I arranged for their hotel bills to be paid through a close friend. In total, there are six individuals. We are making every effort to bring them back as soon as possible.”
He further mentioned that the Chief Minister is personally coordinating with the central and foreign ministers. The central government should take international initiatives to halt the ongoing conflict. However, the government should have evacuated those living in the Middle East earlier, as they were already aware of the situation.
Regarding the death of social media influencer Nancy Grewal in Canada, Minister Singh expressed, “This is a deeply tragic incident, and my condolences go out to the family. It is heartbreaking when a child goes abroad for studies or work, and we have to bring back their remains. Nothing could be more sorrowful.”
He added that there were several issues previously, which led to a comprehensive review. The expansion of new medical colleges is set to begin, starting with institutions like the Shaheed Udham Singh State Institute and others in Hoshiarpur. These will be government medical colleges, with all seats being government-funded, featuring a 60-40 collaboration with the central government.
