Pilgrims Flock to Prayag for Sharad Purnima Celebrations

On Sharad Purnima, thousands gather at Prayags sacred confluence to celebrate, pray, and seek blessings for health and prosperity.

Prayagraj, October 25 (Daily Kiran) : Thousands of devotees gathered in Prayagraj on October 25 to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Sharad Purnima. From the early hours of Brahma Muhurta, the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati drew a remarkable crowd. Many pilgrims immersed themselves in the holy waters of the Ganges, performing rituals and prayers for the well-being of their families and the welfare of all.

Sharad Purnima holds significant importance in Hindu tradition. It is believed to be the only night of the year when the moon is full of its sixteen celestial phases. On this night, it is said that the moon showers nectar upon the earth, linking this date to health and prosperity.

An ancient tradition associated with Sharad Purnima involves placing kheer (a rice pudding) under the open sky. It is believed that the moon’s divine rays enhance the kheer with medicinal properties. Consuming this kheer the following morning is thought to free individuals from ailments and promote wellness.

Sanju, a female devotee who visited the confluence, expressed her sentiments: “Today is Purnima, and we have come to bathe in the Ganges. We pray for everyone’s welfare. This day holds great significance. Kheer is prepared today and kept outside overnight.”

Gopal Guru, a priest at the site, elaborated on the day’s importance. “Today is Sharad Purnima, and many have come to bathe in the Ganges. People will prepare kheer this evening and place it on their rooftops, allowing the moon’s rays to touch it. In the morning, they will offer it as prasad and share it with others. Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra tonight enhances prosperity in the home, and children remain healthy and beautiful. Bathing in the Ganges in Prayag offers a unique joy.”
