Srinagar, May 9: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader in the Union Territory Assembly of engaging in vindictive politics.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah claimed that Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma is eagerly waiting for an opportunity to seize the Chief Minister’s chair in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharma had suggested that there could be a split within the ruling National Conference (NC). In response, Abdullah reminded Sharma that elections are not scheduled before 2029 and emphasized that there is no equivalent of Eknath Shinde within the National Conference. He asserted that no party members are planning to leave.
His comments referenced the senior Shiv Sena leader who had split the party, leading to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.
Abdullah urged the public to interpret Sharma’s statements as a reflection of the BJP’s intentions. He noted that Eknath Shinde left because the BJP facilitated his departure. He warned that the people should be cautious of the BJP’s motives, as they have already endured significant challenges at their hands.
He stressed that the recent delimitation was conducted solely to benefit the BJP and its allies. Abdullah accused the BJP of intimidating people regarding the issue of restoring statehood, asserting that there seems to be no genuine intention to grant Jammu and Kashmir its state status. He dismissed rumors that the delay in cabinet expansion was due to fears of a split, clarifying that it was linked to the lack of statehood.
When asked about the situation in Tamil Nadu, he stated that there is no reason to impose President’s Rule in the southern state.
Abdullah recalled that in 1996, the President invited Atal Bihari Vajpayee to form a government as the leader of the largest party. However, when he failed to prove his majority in the Lok Sabha, the government fell just 13 days later.
He questioned why a different standard is being applied to Tamil Nadu, simply because the BJP failed to secure a majority in the elections there.
