Geneva, February 26: Oman has shared updates on the US-Iran nuclear negotiations via social media. Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Al-Busaidi, announced that the discussions, which began Thursday morning in Geneva, have been temporarily paused.
The minister stated, “We were sharing constructive and positive ideas in Geneva today, and now both US and Iranian negotiators have moved to a break. We expect to resume talks soon.”
Indirect discussions between Iran and the United States commenced on Thursday in Switzerland, facilitated by Oman. This effort is seen as a last attempt to avert conflict following significant military preparations by the US in the Middle East over the past decades.
The Oman-mediated talks follow repeated threats from former President Donald Trump regarding military action against Iran. Last Thursday, the US President had given Tehran a 15-day ultimatum to negotiate, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
Minister Al-Busaidi later clarified that the talks had indeed started, noting that both sides expressed interest in “new and creative ideas and solutions.”
Before the negotiations, Iran’s President asserted that the Islamic Republic has “absolutely no” intention of developing nuclear weapons. Referring to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pajeshkian stated, “Our Supreme Leader has already declared that we will not possess any nuclear weapons.”
A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry mentioned that Rafael Grossi, the UN nuclear chief, may also participate in the Geneva discussions.
While Iran claims the talks are focused solely on its nuclear program, the US insists that Tehran must also address its missile program and reduce support for extremist groups like the Houthis in the region.
Earlier, US Vice President J.D. Vance warned that America will not allow Iran to cross any red lines, emphasizing that a country like Iran should not be permitted to possess nuclear weapons.
