Jaipur, May 12: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took serious note of the recent maternal deaths at Kota Medical College Hospital. On Tuesday, he chaired a high-level review meeting at the CAD auditorium in Kota.
The meeting included key officials such as Principal Secretary of the Medical Department Gayatri Rathore, Kota Division Commissioner Anil Agarwal, District Collector Piyush Samaria, and several hospital superintendents and medical officers from the Medical College Hospital and J.K. Lon Hospital. During the review, Birla requested detailed factual information regarding the incidents.
He assessed the findings of the investigation team sent from Jaipur and reviewed the corrective measures initiated so far. Describing the maternal deaths as an “extremely sensitive issue,” Birla emphasized that negligence in medical care would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He instructed officials to hold accountable those responsible for the incidents and to establish strict protocols to prevent future occurrences.
Birla announced that a team of experts from the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Delhi and other central medical institutions would soon visit hospitals in the Kota-Bundi area. This expert panel will investigate the causes of infections in operating theaters, inspect surgical procedures, and evaluate hospital infrastructure and management systems. Following their visit, the team will prepare a comprehensive report and recommend standard operating procedures (SOPs) to address any deficiencies identified during the inspection.
He also directed doctors and medical staff to exercise utmost caution during surgeries. Birla instructed the Kota Division Commissioner to form a committee under his leadership to inspect all government hospitals in the district. This committee will assess the availability of medical resources, sanitation systems, nursing care, emergency services, and overall hospital management.
The committee is expected to develop a roadmap to address deficiencies and improve healthcare delivery. Birla stressed that maintaining public trust in government hospitals is paramount. He directed officials to strengthen hospital sanitation systems, improve nursing and emergency services, and ensure that no negligence occurs in patient care. Strict action against careless staff was also mandated to ensure better medical treatment for patients and their families, thereby maintaining public confidence in government health institutions.
