New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on September 11, 2026, to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. His visit includes a scheduled bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Putin’s arrival, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal welcoming him on social media platform X. He noted that Putin was greeted at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh. The long-standing partnership between India and Russia is based on a special and privileged strategic alliance.
This visit comes amidst ongoing high-level contacts between the two nations. Just last week, Putin met with Modi during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Bishkek. During that meeting, Modi addressed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, urging Putin to shift from a state of “endless war” to one focused on “ending the conflict.” The war began five years ago with Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Modi expressed, “We must move from a situation of ‘endless war’ towards ‘ending the war.’ The entire humanity wishes for this conflict to conclude as swiftly as possible.”
The upcoming Modi-Putin meeting is expected to review the progress of their partnership and discuss strategically significant issues. Prior to the trip, Russian government spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed Indian media that the two leaders would discuss critical topics concerning India-Russia relations and current global issues, including updates on the Ukraine conflict.
Defense cooperation is likely to be a major focus of the meeting. Both leaders may also explore ongoing and future defense projects.
India is hosting the BRICS Summit on September 12-13, 2026, as part of its presidency of the group this year. Leaders from BRICS member states, partner nations, and special invitees will participate in the summit.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit aims to strengthen mutual cooperation among member countries, work on shared priorities, and exchange views on global and regional issues.
