Bhubaneswar, February 25: The Odisha Vigilance Department has conducted a significant operation, uncovering over ₹4 crore in cash at the residence of Debabrata Mohanty, the mining deputy director from the Cuttack circle. The cash was discovered in his flat located in Bhubaneswar, and counting is currently ongoing.

Mohanty was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from a licensed coal vendor. Following his arrest, vigilance officials launched simultaneous search operations at multiple locations associated with him, including his residential flat in Patia, Bhadrak’s ancestral home in Mathasahi, and his office in Cuttack.

During these searches, officials recovered more than ₹4 crore in cash from Mohanty’s Bhubaneswar flat, cleverly hidden in trolley bags and cabinets. The exact amount is still being verified. This seizure marks the largest cash recovery made by the Odisha Vigilance Department to date. Additionally, ₹1.20 lakh in cash was confiscated from a drawer in his office.

Apart from the cash, vigilance officials have also gathered information about several undisclosed properties, including a luxurious two-story building of approximately 2,400 square feet in Bhubaneswar, and around 130 grams of gold jewelry.

A case has been registered against Debabrata Mohanty under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, at the Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station on February 23. This operation is considered the largest cash seizure in the history of the Odisha Vigilance Department, causing a stir in administrative circles.
