Kolkata, March 17: Political activity is heating up in the Nandigram area of East Medinipur district, West Bengal. On Tuesday, former BJP leader Pabitra Kar officially joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in a ceremony attended by the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee.
The TMC announced Kar’s induction via their official social media platform, ‘X’, stating that he made this decision due to dissatisfaction with the BJP’s “anti-people policies.” The party expressed confidence that under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, Kar would work with the spirit of “Maa-Mati-Manush” for the welfare of the people.
Pabitra Kar’s political journey has been quite intriguing. He was previously a member of the TMC and served as the head of two villages in the Boyal area in 2018, where he held significant influence. However, ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, he switched allegiance to the BJP alongside Shuvendu Adhikari.
In 2023, Kar’s wife won the election on a BJP ticket, taking charge as the head of two gram panchayats in the Boyal area. In the Nandigram assembly constituency, which comprises two blocks, the BJP is perceived to have a relatively strong foothold in the Nandigram-2 block, where Kar is a well-known figure.
Despite his time away from the TMC, Kar has maintained a strong presence and popularity in the region. His return to the party is seen as a significant development in local politics.
On March 15, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the West Bengal assembly elections, which will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes is set for May 4.
