Mumbai, March 17: The Maharashtra government has adopted a stringent approach to combat the rising threat of narcotics. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the assembly that a special task force has been established across the state to curb this illegal trade effectively.
He highlighted that minors are often exploited in drug trafficking and sales. In response, the state government has proposed to the central government to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 18 to 16 years, enabling stricter action in such cases.
This issue was raised in the assembly by MLA Praveen Datke, to which the Chief Minister provided a detailed response.
Fadnavis stated that the drug network extends beyond Maharashtra, linking to other states and even international territories. He assured that police and investigative agencies are working diligently to trace the roots of these crimes and apprehend the culprits, regardless of their location.
He also emphasized that the state government has established a robust mechanism to tackle such crimes in both urban and rural areas, aiming to dismantle the drug network completely.
The Chief Minister sent a strong message to the police department, stating that any officer or staff member found negligent or involved in such crimes would face severe consequences, including possible dismissal.
This initiative by the government is viewed as a significant crackdown on substance abuse in the state, aimed at protecting youth and enhancing societal safety.
