
Bhubaneswar, March 10: Despite ongoing government efforts to raise public awareness, cybercriminals in Odisha are targeting residents and defrauding them of millions.
According to official data, Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi revealed in the Odisha Assembly that from June 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, various police stations in the state recorded 4,238 cybercrime cases, amounting to over ₹260.61 crore in fraud.
The reported cases include 2,482 instances of financial fraud, 1,689 social media scams, 14 hacking incidents, and 53 cases of other types of cyber fraud.
Over the past 18 months, Odisha police have arrested 868 cybercriminals. This includes 172 involved in financial fraud, 638 in social media scams, one linked to hacking, and 57 in other cyber fraud cases.
However, out of the ₹260.61 crore defrauded by cybercriminals, the police have only managed to recover ₹61.36 lakh for the victims, while ₹8.89 crore has been frozen.
The Chief Minister noted that between June and December 2024, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) received 27,368 complaints, with 49,426 complaints logged throughout 2025. According to the portal’s data, cyber fraudsters swindled over ₹711.99 crore from individuals during the specified period.
From June 1 to December 31, 2024, victims were reimbursed ₹2.47 crore, while ₹23.64 crore was frozen in suspicious accounts through coordination with financial institutions and payment intermediaries.
In 2025, ongoing actions led to the recovery of ₹5.31 crore for complainants, while timely identification of fraudulent accounts allowed for the freezing of ₹68.71 crore, preventing misuse of funds and protecting victims’ interests.
