
Bhubaneswar, May 30: Odisha Police has ramped up its statewide crime prevention efforts following directives from Director General of Police (DGP) Y.B. Khurana. This special enforcement campaign, initiated on May 12, targets criminal activities across the state.
According to a statement released by the state police, the operation is being conducted under the supervision of district police superintendents and the police commissioner of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack.
The campaign aims to execute pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs), apprehend fugitives, curb drug trafficking, seize illegal weapons, halt illegal mineral transportation, and strengthen enforcement against drunk driving and other unlawful activities.
Police sources indicate that this special initiative is being directly overseen by Additional Director General (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar.
In the past 18 days, Odisha Police has executed 5,703 pending NBWs statewide. They have arrested 520 suspects in various criminal cases and presented them before the courts.
Additionally, cases have been filed against 957 habitual offenders under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), while action has been taken against 2,620 individuals under Section 126 of the IPC.
As part of the anti-drug campaign, police registered 97 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases and arrested 137 individuals. During raids at various locations, authorities seized approximately 7,398 kilograms of cannabis, 586 grams of brown sugar, 220 grams of heroin, 219 liters of cough syrup, and 1,050 bottles of cough syrup.
Police also confiscated 27 vehicles, 14 mobile phones, three pistols, and cash amounting to ₹292,000, allegedly used in drug trafficking.
Furthermore, during this period, 2,154 excise-related cases were registered. Special emphasis was placed on road safety enforcement. Police took action against 3,293 individuals for drunk driving and collected fines totaling ₹64.6 million for violations of motor vehicle and road safety regulations.
The state police has intensified actions against illegal animal transportation, mining, and arms trade. In the campaign against illegal animal transportation, 29 cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals. Quick police action saved 284 animals from 17 vehicles.
Odisha Police has also stepped up its crackdown on illegal mining activities. In connection with illegal mining and mineral transportation, 654 cases were registered, resulting in the arrest of 162 individuals. During the campaign, police seized 878 vehicles and machinery, including excavators, trucks, tractors, tippers, power tillers, and JCB machines.
