Bhubaneswar, June 8: The Commissionerate Police has arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly committing sexual assault and blackmail. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena, the suspect lured a 23-year-old woman under the pretense of assisting her with a police investigation related to a job fraud case.
The accused has been identified as Himanshu Samal, also known as Jeetu, from the Badachana area of Jajpur district.
Details of the case reveal that the victim’s mother works as a cook in the Bharatpur area of Bhubaneswar. She reportedly paid an unknown fraudster ₹30,000, who promised to secure a job for her daughter. However, the scammer failed to deliver on this promise, leaving both mother and daughter deceived.
Speaking to the media, DCP Meena explained that such con artists often exploit victims’ bank accounts. He noted that this particular fraudster had transferred nearly ₹2 lakh, obtained through deceit, into the victim’s bank account.
Concerned about potential police action regarding this transfer, the victim and her mother later contacted Jeetu for assistance. He assured them that he would manage the situation if a police investigation commenced.
DCP Meena further revealed that Jeetu impersonated a police officer from the Dhauli police station. He used a profile picture of a policeman and called the victim from a different number on June 5. He informed her that a complaint regarding job fraud had been lodged against her at the Dhauli police station and instructed her to come in. Following his directions, the victim met Jeetu in Dhauli on June 6.
Instead of taking her to the police station, he allegedly checked her into an OYO hotel located in the Pipili police station area of Puri district. Jeetu then left under the pretense of meeting police officials and returned late at night. He convinced her to stay overnight and reportedly coerced her into posing as his wife or girlfriend, recording photos and videos while sexually assaulting her against her will.
The next morning, he dropped her near her hostel and allegedly threatened and blackmailed her. Upon reaching the hostel, the victim informed her mother about the incident, and both filed a formal complaint at the Dhauli police station on June 7.
The police acted swiftly, apprehending the fleeing suspect from his hideout on Monday morning.
