Bhubaneswar, May 16: The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, announced on Friday that the state government will soon introduce a dedicated film policy aimed at revitalizing and strengthening the Odia film industry.
This announcement was made during a special dialogue event held at the Culture Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, where the Chief Minister engaged in detailed discussions with prominent figures from the Odia film industry, including actors, producers, and technicians, about the current state and future of Odia cinema.
Highlighting Odia cinema as a significant symbol of the state’s identity, the Chief Minister stated that cinema is not merely a medium of entertainment but also a reflection of society’s culture, emotions, memories, and collective spirit. He remarked, “A society that creates great cinema can firmly establish its identity on the global stage.”
He emphasized that Odia cinema should not imitate other industries but focus on discovering and presenting its unique voice rooted in Odisha’s culture and traditions.
The Chief Minister encouraged filmmakers to create original content connected to Odia society and everyday life. He pointed out themes such as the culture associated with Lord Jagannath, Odisha’s maritime history, tribal traditions, the struggles of people during cyclones and floods, rural life, and the river culture of the Mahanadi and other rivers as rich storytelling subjects for Odia cinema. Films based on such authentic themes will foster a deeper connection with audiences.
Stressing the need for professional skill development in film production, the Chief Minister also announced plans to establish a film training institute in Odisha.
Criticizing previous governments for neglecting the film sector, Mohan Charan Majhi assured that the current government is committed to preserving and promoting Odia identity and culture. He promised that financial constraints would not hinder the growth of the Odia film industry and that the government would build robust film infrastructure in the state.
Suryabanshi Suraj, Minister of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, mentioned that the Odia film industry will play a significant role in the celebrations for Odisha’s centenary in 2036. Several prominent figures from the Odia film industry, including Anubhav Mohanty, Anu Chaudhary, Pushpa Panda, Harihar Mahapatra, Pinky Pradhan, and producer Siddharth Agarwal, participated in the discussions.
