Bhubaneswar, March 21: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi has made a significant decision to regularize more than 13,000 junior teachers. This announcement was made through an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Friday.
According to the CMO, the state government has approved the regularization of contractual junior teachers (planned) across the state.
As per this decision, junior teachers appointed during the 2023-24 period will now be regularized, benefiting over 13,000 educators in Odisha.
This move is expected to provide long-awaited relief to thousands of teachers who have been working under contractual terms despite repeated demands for job security.
The official statement noted that teachers will be considered regular employees from the date they assume their duties. However, they will receive symbolic benefits for the period up to December 31, 2025.
Starting January 1, 2026, they will be entitled to full salaries and all other benefits applicable to regular government employees, including allowances and service-related rights.
Previously, the Chief Minister had announced the government’s intention to regularize junior schematic teachers. With formal approval now granted, this decision has been welcomed by the teaching community, many of whom have been protesting on this issue for months.
Despite the state government’s prior steps to eliminate the contractual system in government jobs, over 13,000 junior teachers continued to serve on a contractual basis for their initial six years. This situation had led to growing dissatisfaction among teachers, who argued that this system deprived them of equal pay and job security.
There have been ongoing demands for the complete abolition of the contractual system and immediate regularization of their services.
Although the government had already increased their monthly salaries, the demand for full regularization remained unresolved until now. With this decision, the state government has taken a significant step toward addressing the concerns of the teaching community and strengthening the education system in Odisha.
