
Bhubaneswar, April 9: The Odisha Vigilance Department arrested a senior engineer from the Water Resources Department on Thursday for possessing assets 241% greater than his known income.
According to a senior Vigilance officer, Rajesh Chandra Mohanty, who served as the Additional Chief Engineer, was taken into custody on April 9. He was presented before a special Vigilance judge in Cuttack.
The officer stated that Mohanty failed to provide satisfactory explanations for his substantial assets in relation to his income.
Earlier, on Wednesday, simultaneous raids were conducted at six locations across Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal as part of the investigation.
The properties raided included a three-story house in the Baramunda Housing Board Colony in Bhubaneswar, his ancestral home in Kolhasingh village in Jajpur district, a relative’s house in Deula Sahi, his office, a farmhouse in the Bhapur area of Dhenkanal, and a colleague’s residence in Cuttack’s Naya Bazaar.
During the investigation, assets worth millions of rupees were uncovered in the names of Mohanty and his family.
These assets include a luxurious three-story house in Bhubaneswar, a two-story farmhouse in Dhenkanal, eight valuable plots (in Bhubaneswar, Kalinganagar in Jajpur, and Bhapur in Dhenkanal), ₹623,000 in cash, 350 grams of gold jewelry, ₹18.1 million in deposits, ₹1.347 million in air travel expenses, two four-wheelers, three two-wheelers, and approximately ₹3.557 million worth of household items.
The Vigilance Department is continuing its investigation into the matter.
