Concerns Over Fairness in Bengal Elections, Says Congress Leader Hussain Dalwai

Mumbai, April 14: The assembly elections in West Bengal are witnessing a fierce competition among candidates from Congress, BJP, and TMC. Congress is contesting the elections independently. Congress leader Hussain Dalwai expressed skepticism about the fairness of the elections in Bengal.

In a conversation in Mumbai, Dalwai stated that he does not trust that the elections in Bengal will be conducted fairly. He claimed that a significant number of voters have been deprived of their voting rights through systematic means. He also noted that efforts are being made to undermine the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Bengal.

Regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, Dalwai mentioned that the discussion about providing reservations for women has been ongoing since the time of Rajiv Gandhi. This is not a new issue. The reservations in district councils, taluka panchayats, corporations, and municipalities were made possible due to Rajiv Gandhi’s initiatives. Currently, efforts are underway to secure reservations in the state and national assemblies, and opposing this is not justified. It is a positive step.

On the topic of religious conversion, Dalwai firmly stated that he does not believe in forced conversions. He emphasized that it is wrong to impose one’s religion on others. People are religious, and they should be allowed to practice their faith. Statements suggesting that “my religion is good, and yours is bad” are entirely incorrect, regardless of whether they stem from Hindutva or any other religion. The Constitution grants individuals the right to convert if they choose to do so, but coercion is unacceptable.

Dalwai also commented on the construction of the B.R. Ambedkar Memorial, stating that progress is painfully slow. Every year, large crowds gather on April 14 and December 6, yet there are inadequate facilities for their accommodation and safety. In contrast, significant funds are allocated for events like the Kumbh Mela, which occurs only once in several years. The Ambedkar Memorial hosts major events twice a year, yet it lacks proper funding. This is indeed a matter of concern.
