New Delhi, April 2: The changing seasons affect everyone, but children are particularly vulnerable. Issues like stomach upsets and common colds trouble them the most. However, Ayurveda offers remedies that can enhance children’s immunity without negative side effects.
One such remedy is nutmeg, which Ayurveda classifies as a digestive aid and a brain booster. It helps alleviate stomach-related issues, including gas. Yet, few know the proper way to consume it.
Ayurveda suggests that proper preparation of a remedy enhances its benefits and makes it gentler on the body. Nutmeg is inherently sharp, so it requires special preparation for children.
Historically, nutmeg was never given directly to children. Instead, it was boiled in milk, then set in yogurt, and finally cooked in ghee. Only after this process was it ground into milk and given to children in small amounts. Initially, nutmeg is boiled in milk for a short time, then placed in yogurt for a few hours, and finally cooked in ghee. This preparation reduces its hot and sharp qualities while enhancing its medicinal properties.
A pinch of this preparation can strengthen immunity, reduce anxiety, alleviate stomach issues, and provide relief from cold and cough. If a child struggles to sleep, a small amount can also help calm the nervous system, promoting deeper sleep. However, it is crucial not to give this to children under six months without consulting a physician, and it should be avoided if the child has an upset stomach.
