Tovino Thomas Shares Fascinating Story Behind Pallichattambi Church Set

Chennai, April 2: Actor Tovino Thomas recently shared an intriguing anecdote about the Malayalam film ‘Pallichattambi,’ in which he plays the lead role, directed by Dijo Jose Antony.

During an interview, Thomas revealed that the church set created for the film looked so authentic that an elderly woman mistook it for a real church and began praying there.

He explained that the film’s storyline is set in 1958, a period that posed significant challenges for him. “I was born in 1989, so I have some knowledge of the 90s from films and my experiences. However, the 1950s were entirely new to me. Even my father was born in 1952, meaning we had limited information about that era,” he said.

To accurately depict that time, the team relied on old photographs, books, and detailed descriptions. The entire set was designed based on this research. A large area in the Thodupuzha region was transformed into a village for the shoot, which lasted several days.

Thomas continued, “We had to create a church, and it wasn’t just the exterior; the entire interior was crafted as well. During the shoot, an elderly woman came in and started praying, thinking it was a real church. We felt we should inform her that it wasn’t real, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to do so, as prayer is prayer. We were also pleased that our set looked so genuine.”

He added that the director meticulously designed the entire area to resemble a real village, complete with shops, buildings, a church, and a crossroads. Remarkably, all of this was located by a dam that had been completely transformed into a village setting.
