EU President Warns of Global Economic Instability Due to Irans Actions

New Delhi, April 2: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently held a phone conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The two leaders discussed rising tensions in the Middle East and issued warnings about the potential threats to global economic stability.

On the social media platform X, von der Leyen stated, “I had a productive conversation with Keir Starmer. We discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s actions are jeopardizing global economic stability. We will work with our partners to ensure that freedom of navigation is restored as soon as possible.”

She further mentioned that they also talked about the upcoming EU-UK summit, emphasizing its importance in fulfilling last year’s commitments and strengthening their partnership.

Additionally, the UK will host a virtual summit regarding the Strait of Hormuz, bringing together representatives from 35 countries to explore diplomatic and political options for reopening this critical waterway. This meeting comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump criticized European allies, urging them to learn to fight for themselves.

In a 20-minute address to the nation on Wednesday evening, Trump downplayed the global impact of the U.S. dependency on the Strait of Hormuz and its effective closure.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Wednesday, “UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will host a meeting that will bring together all countries to address concerns related to the Strait of Hormuz for the first time. All nations will explore possible diplomatic and political measures to restore freedom of navigation.”

A British official informed CNN that the UK will continue to collaborate with the U.S. on this initiative, which also involves other key partners, including the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Starmer noted that military planners will also be invited to the summit to assess how to prepare their capabilities for a post-conflict scenario and to ensure the Strait is safe and accessible. However, he warned that “it will not be easy.”
