New Delhi, August 25: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has launched a protest against the lack of clean drinking water for students at Delhi University. Led by activist Samarth Beniwal, students gathered in North Campus carrying empty bottles to highlight the issue and issued a warning to the Vice-Chancellor. They claimed that except for a few select colleges, students are forced to spend between ₹20 to ₹40 on bottled water due to the unavailability of clean water.
Samarth Beniwal stated, “Our Gen-Z students have sent a clear message through this protest. We are like these empty bottles, and we are placing them before the VC. We demand our right to clean drinking water. This is not a political issue; it is a student issue, and we will fight for this right.”
He further explained that this protest is part of the NSUI’s “Water Rights Journey.” They are visiting every college campus and department to investigate whether students have access to clean drinking water. Only five or six selected colleges reportedly provide clean water, while some areas have no water supply at all. Beniwal accused the Delhi University administration of deliberately neglecting the issue.
“Where will the students go? They will have to buy packaged water, costing them ₹20 to ₹40. Delhi University has turned education into a means of exploitation, and now they are also exploiting students for water. Fees have increased, and now even water is a source of profit for DU,” he added.
Beniwal warned, “Our journey has been ongoing for the past ten days. We have visited as many colleges as possible and will continue to do so. Whether students vote for us or not, they are still students of Delhi University. I want to tell the VC that if he cannot provide us our rights, we know how to take them.”
