Panama Hit by 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake, Emergency Declared After Recent Tremors

Panama, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : Early Tuesday morning, residents of Panama experienced another powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale. This tremor struck just three days after two significant earthquakes shook the region, causing widespread fear and damage. According to the National Seismological Center, the latest quake’s epicenter was located 10 kilometers deep.

At approximately 4:50 AM local time, the ground trembled once more, prompting many to flee to open spaces as buildings and roads sustained further damage. The previous tremors, which occurred late Friday and early Saturday, measured 7.7 and 6.6 in magnitude, respectively, leaving the nation on edge.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Panama’s southern coast, shaking structures over 100 miles away in the capital. Following this initial quake, several aftershocks were felt throughout the day, culminating in the subsequent 6.6 magnitude tremor.

The impact of these earthquakes has been felt across Panama City, with many buildings suffering structural damage, including cracks in walls. In a state of panic, residents chose to remain outside their homes overnight, fearing aftershocks and waiting for updates on the situation.

In response to the crisis, the Panamanian government has declared a state of emergency to expedite relief efforts and assist affected communities. India has offered support in light of the dire circumstances. Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed solidarity with the Panamanian government and its people.

Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar took to social media to convey his condolences, stating, “India stands with the government and people of Panama following the earthquake. Our heartfelt sympathies and prayers are with all the injured and affected, especially those families who have faced loss and hardship.”
