Jaipur, 22 August (Kiran News): The Rajasthan government has taken a major decision regarding smart meters. The mandatory installation of smart meters for new electricity connections has now been removed. In areas where the installation of smart meters has not yet started, old or burnt meters can be replaced with traditional meters. Electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) have issued new guidelines in this regard.

Under the new arrangement, two sets of rules will be applicable. Where smart meter installation work is ongoing or completed, new connections and faulty meters will be replaced only with smart meters. However, in other areas, conventional (non-smart) meters will continue to be used for now. DISCOMs Chairperson Aarti Dogra stated that due to a shortage of smart meters with Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Providers and limited staff, the process of giving new connections and replacing faulty meters was being affected. Considering this issue, the amendment has been implemented. This arrangement will remain until the smart meter rollout is fully streamlined.

According to the guidelines, it is mandatory to provide timely services to consumers. In urban areas, meters must be replaced within 24 hours, and in rural areas within 72 hours. If, for any reason, a meter is not available for two months, consumers will receive a 5 percent discount on their electricity bill, and the amount will be recovered from the concerned officer.
