No Changes to Polling Agents Seating Rules in West Bengal, Election Commission Clarifies

Kolkata, April 7: Amid the ongoing West Bengal assembly elections, claims have surfaced that polling agents from various political parties will not be allowed to sit inside polling stations on election day. The state election commission has refuted these claims.

In a statement released by the state election commission, it was noted that the Election Commission of India is aware of reports circulating in certain media outlets suggesting that polling agents from different political parties would not be permitted to sit inside polling stations during the 2026 assembly elections.

The statement further clarified that the Election Commission of India has not issued any new guidelines regarding the seating arrangements for agents on election day. Therefore, the previous guidelines concerning polling agents will remain unchanged.

Additionally, stringent security measures have been implemented for the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. The largest deployment of paramilitary forces in the state’s history has been arranged, with approximately 2,400 paramilitary companies deployed, totaling around 240,000 personnel.

Notably, this deployment is more than double that of the previous elections, highlighting the administration’s seriousness about security this time around.

This year, there is also a record number of female security personnel deployed, with around 20,000 female paramilitary troops, equivalent to about 200 companies, assigned to election duties.

It is important to note that voting in West Bengal will occur in two phases across a total of 294 seats. The first phase will take place on April 23 for 152 seats, while the second phase is scheduled for April 29 for the remaining 142 seats. The counting of votes and results will be announced on May 4.
