Nitish Kumars Potential Role in Modis Cabinet Depends on PMs Discretion, Says Shyam Rajak

Patna, July 2: Discussions surrounding the expansion of Prime Minister Modi’s cabinet have intensified. There are speculations about former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar potentially receiving a significant position within the Modi cabinet. Meanwhile, some legislators from the Janata Dal (United) are advocating for him to be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister. In light of this, JD(U) legislator Shyam Rajak has clarified that the decision regarding cabinet expansion or any appointments lies solely within the Prime Minister’s jurisdiction. He emphasized that such decisions should be made with the Prime Minister’s discretion and in the interest of the nation, without any external interference.

In an interview, Rajak stated that if the Prime Minister believes a leader should be included in the cabinet or appointed as Deputy Prime Minister, it is within his constitutional rights. He noted that if the Prime Minister heeds the advice of a senior leader, it reflects his political acumen.

When asked about Nitish Kumar, Rajak remarked that Kumar holds a significant stature in politics and is viewed by the public as an experienced and progressive leader. He possesses administrative experience and decision-making capabilities. Rajak also mentioned that if Kumar were to receive a major position in the future, it would be in the national interest and should be viewed from a developmental perspective rather than a political one.

During the conversation, Rajak also commented on Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav’s statement about his humble beginnings, saying, “If that is the case, why is there such an uproar? He does not live in a two-room situation.” Rajak pointed out that Yadav enjoys a life of comfort and luxury, with his homes filled with decorative items that cost millions. If he were truly poor, he would live a life reflective of that status. Rajak questioned why Yadav argues over his bungalow and requests a lift installation, suggesting it indicates a discrepancy between his public persona and private desires.

Rajak noted that some senior leaders in Yadav’s party have advised him to engage more with the public to strengthen his political experience. He remarked that the original purpose of the RJD’s formation was to uplift the marginalized and backward classes in Bihar. However, he believes the party has strayed from its foundational goals and now operates under family control, with decisions being made by Yadav’s father. The party’s current standing is evident, as it has lost significant ground nationally.

The central government is expected to introduce the controversial Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. This bill proposes that individuals facing serious criminal charges and detained for 30 days could be automatically removed from their positions as Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, or Ministers. Rajak stated, “The Constitution cannot be altered, but amendments can be made. It has been amended multiple times. If the Prime Minister wishes to propose an amendment, it will be presented in Parliament. Decisions in Parliament are made by consensus and majority, and if an amendment passes on that basis, it is entirely constitutional. Any amendment aimed at curbing corruption and crime should be welcomed.”
