RSS Chief Emphasizes Unity in Diversity as Indias Cultural Mission

New York, August 30: Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated that India’s cultural mission is to help the world recognize unity in diversity. He emphasized that Indians should convey this message through their actions rather than mere words. Bhagwat asserted that both unity and diversity are ingrained in India’s DNA, reflecting the nation’s age-old cultural ethos of embracing diversity while remaining united.

Speaking at the ‘Universal Unity Festival’ held at Madison Square Garden in New York, Bhagwat remarked, “Nations are not just geographical entities. Every nation has a message to deliver, a mission to fulfill, and a destiny to complete.” He highlighted that India’s destiny lies in recognizing the unity hidden amidst the world’s myriad diversities and periodically reminding humanity of this principle.

Bhagwat stated, “We are one, and it is our diversity that enhances this unity. Therefore, diversity should be celebrated, respected, and accepted, while we also keep in mind this spirit of unity. It is a very real sentiment.” He compared common perceptions between America and India, noting that discussions around the United States often revolve around the term pluralism, whereas conversations about India focus on the phrase unity in diversity. For India, both unity and diversity are embedded in its DNA.

He acknowledged the visible differences among humans, such as nationality, language, religion, and lifestyles. However, he emphasized that these differences do not diminish the natural bond that inspires people to care for one another. “We may look different, with so many nationalities, languages, religions, and ways of life,” he said.

Bhagwat pointed out that humans are endowed with the ability to think and discern right from wrong, which brings with it the responsibility to protect the world and care for others. He explained that the Indian concept of religion transcends mere faith or worship practices, representing principles that sustain and balance the universe.

He stated, “Religion is not a creed or a ritual. It is something far beyond that. It is the rule by which the universe operates.” Bhagwat emphasized the need for individuals, society, and the environment to progress together, asserting that one should not be suppressed for the advancement of another.

He concluded by stating that India’s message is crucial at a time when the world grapples with various challenges. Indians should embody this message through their lives and actions. “This is the mission India must fulfill. Indians worldwide should not just preach but set an example and act. If we do this, it will be a boon for a world struggling with numerous problems and stumbling at every step,” he said.
