Hyderabad, August 3: The Telangana government announced on Monday that the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has set a new benchmark for public healthcare institutions across the country by completing 1,000 robot-assisted surgeries in less than three years.
This achievement reflects the government’s commitment to providing better healthcare for all and marks a revolutionary change in public health. It ensures that patients who previously could not afford such expensive treatments now have access to world-class robotic surgery.
A. Revanth Reddy, the President of NIMS’ Governing Council and Chief Minister, praised the dedication, teamwork, and commitment of Dr. Rahul Devaraj, NIMS Director and Senior Professor of Urology and Renal Transplantation, along with the staff from Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Anesthesiology, Nursing Services, Operation Theatre, and all supporting departments for reaching this historic milestone.
The Chief Minister described this achievement as a significant turning point in public healthcare, making world-class robotic surgery accessible to patients who have never had such advanced treatment options before.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), this milestone is a testament to NIMS’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and equitable healthcare access for everyone.
By incorporating modern robotic technology into everyday clinical work, NIMS has enhanced surgical precision, reduced postoperative pain and blood loss, shortened hospital stays, and facilitated faster recovery for patients.
Out of the 1,000 robot-assisted surgeries, 590 were performed by the Urology department, 248 by Surgical Gastroenterology, and 162 by Surgical Oncology. These surgeries included complex procedures related to urology, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, gynecological, and oncological fields.
More than 90% of these surgeries were conducted free of charge under government-supported healthcare schemes, such as Arogyashri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). This ensures that the benefits of modern robotic surgery reach economically disadvantaged patients, reaffirming the Telangana government’s commitment to providing affordable, world-class healthcare for all citizens.
The Urology department performed surgeries on individuals aged from one year to over 80 years. These procedures included highly complex operations such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, intricate robotic renal transplantation surgeries, urogynaecological procedures, and advanced reconstructive surgeries.
Health Minister D. Raja Narasimha congratulated all the doctors, nurses, technicians, and staff at NIMS for achieving this remarkable feat. He stated, “It is gratifying to see that more than 90% of these robotic surgeries were performed free of charge under the Arogyashri and CMRF schemes, demonstrating our government’s commitment to providing advanced medical services to the people. Ensuring world-class medical services for every citizen is the Telangana government’s goal.”
