NHRC Takes Notice of Minor Held as Adult in Kasna Jail

Greater Noida, June 19: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of reports regarding a minor boy being unlawfully held as an adult prisoner for over two months in Kasna Jail, located in Gautam Buddh Nagar. The commission has deemed this incident extremely serious and has issued notices to senior police and jail officials in Uttar Pradesh, demanding an explanation.

According to reports, the boy was arrested during protests by laborers in the district who were advocating for wage increases and improved working conditions. Despite being a minor, he was placed among adult inmates in Kasna Jail. It is reported that after being held for more than two months, he was eventually transferred to a juvenile home under the juvenile justice system.

The NHRC has classified this case as a serious issue related to the potential violation of children’s rights and human rights. The commission has instructed the Director General of the Uttar Pradesh Jail Administration and Reform Services, as well as the Director General of Police, to submit a detailed report within two weeks.

Furthermore, the NHRC stated that if the facts described in media reports are found to be accurate, it would not only constitute a violation of juvenile justice laws but also represent a grave infringement of the minor’s fundamental and human rights. Given the sensitivity of the case, the NHRC’s Director General (Investigation) has been directed to form a team to inspect the site and submit an independent investigation report to the commission within a week.

Reports indicate that despite the court granting bail to the boy, he remains in the juvenile home. This is attributed to his family’s financial situation, as they are unable to fulfill the necessary bail formalities and requirements, preventing his release.
