Jammu, August 29: Concerns have escalated for Kashmiri Pandit employees working in the Kashmir Valley under the Prime Minister’s package. This follows the receipt of threatening letters from the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba. Reports indicate that these threats contain personal information, including employees’ identities, phone numbers, photographs, and vehicle details.
A member of the Kashmiri Pandit community described this as a serious challenge for security agencies, stating that the continuous flow of such letters creates an atmosphere of fear. He emphasized, “We will not allow the fears of the 1990s to return.”
In an interview, he pointed out that this is not the first instance of threats. Earlier in August, threats emerged, with letters dated August 23 and 25 also surfacing. The frequency of these letters within a single month raises significant concerns, especially given the personal details mentioned. It poses a challenge for security agencies to determine how such sensitive information is reaching the perpetrators.
He recalled that the 1990s were marked by terror and violence, forcing many Kashmiri Pandits to flee the valley. Memories from that era still haunt the community. Naturally, threats against employees returning to the valley for work heighten their anxiety. He warned that if the government fails to provide adequate security for these employees, it could jeopardize the community’s broader return and rehabilitation in the valley.
The letters also accuse Kashmiri Pandit employees of working on behalf of the RSS and BJP agendas. In response, he clarified that those working in the valley are not there for any political agenda; they are there to earn a living and support their families.
He stressed that their pride in being Indian and their trust in the nation should not be linked to any political organization. They are prepared to do anything for their country, which remains paramount to them. He noted that labeling individuals with political or ideological tags is part of a strategy to instill fear. The Kashmiri Pandit community has faced adversity before and will not retreat due to threats.
In the meantime, during a recent episode of comedian Zameer Raina’s show “India’s Got Latent 2,” comments regarding Kashmiri Pandits were made. He remarked that political parties have long been accused of exploiting the community’s name, and now even social media personalities are commenting on their displacement. It is easy to comment on events from the outside, but understanding the pain of those who have lost their homes is not simple. Many families left the valley in the 1990s without stable housing or sufficient resources, starting anew in challenging conditions across various states.
Despite numerous hardships, these families have ensured their children received education. Today, the next generation includes doctors, engineers, and individuals in significant corporate roles. This struggle and hard work are integral to the community’s narrative, which should not be trivialized. If anyone has made offensive remarks about their suffering, they should reflect on their words and apologize.
He illustrated the pain of displacement by saying that even a bird becomes restless if its nest is broken, while Kashmiri Pandits have endured the agony of being uprooted from their homes, properties, and roots.
