New MEMU Train Service to Ease Commuting Between Delhi and Faridabad

New Delhi, May 8: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved the operation of a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service between Delhi and Faridabad. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Railway Minister, the Chief Minister stated that this new service will provide significant relief to thousands of daily commuters traveling between the two cities.

The Chief Minister highlighted that a large number of people from Faridabad and surrounding areas travel to Delhi daily for work, education, business, and other purposes. Residents and regular passengers have long demanded additional and more convenient rail connectivity. Due to heavy pressure on the existing transport network, commuters often face overcrowding, delays, and inconvenience. The introduction of the MEMU service will offer passengers a faster, more affordable, and accessible public transport option.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister noted that the Delhi government is collaborating with the central government to address citizens’ daily commuting challenges and improve transport infrastructure. Under the leadership of the ‘double-engine government,’ transport and connectivity projects in Delhi and the National Capital Region are gaining momentum. According to her, the new rail service will not only save travel time for passengers but also reduce pressure on road traffic.

The Mainline Electric Multiple Unit is a modern electric passenger train service operated by Indian Railways, designed for short and medium-distance travel on major railway routes. Unlike traditional trains, MEMU trains do not have a separate locomotive; instead, they are powered by motor coaches, making them more efficient on routes with frequent stops. These services are primarily aimed at enhancing connectivity between cities and nearby towns, rather than for travel within the city.

MEMU trains typically operate at speeds of 100 to 110 km/h and are considered a fast, affordable, and convenient mode of transport for daily commuters, office-goers, and students. Their design facilitates easy boarding and alighting, making short-distance travel smoother and more efficient. Modern MEMU trains are also equipped with amenities such as LED lighting, GPS-based passenger information systems, bio-toilets, CCTV cameras, and energy-efficient technology.
