India and Brazil Seek Enhanced Cooperation in Defense and AI Sectors

Milwaukee, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : India and Brazil are actively seeking to strengthen their collaboration in various sectors, including defense, artificial intelligence (AI), skill development, and economic growth. Discussions on potential investments by Brazil’s aircraft manufacturer Embraer in India were also part of the dialogue.

Brazil’s Minister of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, Marcio Elias Rosa, shared insights following his meeting with India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, on the sidelines of the G20 trade ministers’ meeting.

When asked about areas for joint efforts, Rosa highlighted the potential for cooperation across a range of topics, from new technologies to defense. He emphasized key sectors such as bio-economy, circular economy, digital economy, and artificial intelligence as focal points for collaboration.

The ministers also addressed skill development. Rosa noted, “We discussed manpower and capacity enhancement.” He specifically mentioned India’s strong capabilities in vocational training, stating that the country offers excellent vocational courses.

Defense was another significant topic of their discussions. Rosa confirmed that they talked about the potential investment by Embraer in India. He remarked, “We discussed the possibilities of Embraer’s investment in aircraft-related projects in India, and the list is quite extensive.” However, he refrained from providing detailed information about the investment amount or specific projects.

Rosa underscored Brazil’s view of its economic relationship with India as vital. He remarked, “India is an extremely important trade partner for Brazil.” He also noted India’s significance as a global economic player, stating, “Our relationship with India is strong.”

These comments come at a time when both nations are discussing ways to expand their current trade framework through Mercosur. Rosa mentioned that the existing preferential tariff agreement has limitations, and both parties are considering broadening its scope. He indicated that recent terms of reference have been established to facilitate future proposals and discussions.

The strategic partnership between India and Brazil has a solid foundation, with both countries collaborating on international platforms such as BRICS, IBSA, and G20. They have previously engaged in cooperation across defense, science and technology, energy, and trade.

Embraer, headquartered in Brazil, is one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers. Its planes are already in use in India’s civil and defense aviation sectors. Should Embraer proceed with investments in India, it could mark a significant advancement in industrial and business relations between the two nations.
