NDA Leaders Decide to Raise Oppositions Concerns on Womens Empowerment

New Delhi, April 18: In a significant meeting held on Friday, the floor leaders of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convened in Parliament following the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026.

Sources indicate that the members have resolved to highlight the opposition’s stance against women’s empowerment. To raise awareness about this issue, they plan to utilize protests, press conferences, and social media to disseminate their message nationwide.

The government had called a three-day special session of Parliament to present and discuss the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026; the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026; and the Delimitation Bill, 2026.

During discussions in the Lok Sabha over the past two days, proposals were introduced to increase the size of the ‘House of the People’ (Lok Sabha). Additionally, provisions for delimitation based on the 2011 census and the implementation of reservations for women were included. The Union Territory (UT) Laws Bill aimed to apply similar provisions for Puducherry, Delhi, and Jammu and Kashmir.

The opposition opposed linking delimitation with the implementation of women’s reservations. On Friday, with 528 members present and voting, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 received 298 votes in favor and 230 against, leaving the government short by approximately 54 votes.

Following the results, Parliamentary Minister Kiren Rijiju requested Speaker Om Birla not to conduct voting on the remaining two bills, as all three bills were deeply interconnected.

Sensing the opposition’s mood, the Union Law Ministry notified the Women’s Reservation Act of 2023 late Thursday night. This act provides for a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Although this bill was passed in September 2023, its implementation was tied to a new delimitation exercise. The government introduced this new law to amend relevant provisions and pave the way for implementation before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

It is noteworthy that the last census was conducted in 2011, and the next was scheduled for 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
