New Delhi, April 26: Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) launched a sharp attack on opposition parties, claiming that their failure to secure votes in elections has led them to vent their frustration on the Election Commission.
This response came after 73 opposition members of the Rajya Sabha submitted a notice for a resolution demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The proposal, addressed to the President of India, accused the CEC of “proven misconduct” through actions and errors made since March 15, 2026.
BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh stated that since voters are not supporting opposition parties during elections, they are directing their “anger” towards the Election Commission.
He remarked, “They lose elections due to their own actions and their inability to connect with the public.”
NCP leader Praful Patel expressed that such “mud-slinging” actions weaken constitutional institutions.
Referring to past electoral results where the opposition defeated the BJP in several states, he noted, “The Aam Aadmi Party defeated the BJP in Delhi and Punjab. The Trinamool Congress formed the government in West Bengal, Congress in Karnataka, and the Left alliance in Kerala. At all these times, the opposition had no issues with the Election Commission.”
Patel emphasized that the Election Commission is acceptable to the opposition as long as they are winning; otherwise, it becomes a case of “sour grapes.”
Echoing similar sentiments, former Union Minister and BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Choubey stated, “Whenever the opposition loses elections, they accuse the Election Commission of being biased and unfair.”
He further added, “Such allegations against the institution are baseless.”
BJP leader Rohan Gupta remarked, “This is the true face of the opposition.”
Questioning the opposition’s intentions behind this move, he asked, “Do they want violence during elections? This is the first time there has been no violence before elections in West Bengal. Additionally, it is the first time since independence that such a large number of people have voted.”
Gupta raised concerns about the basis on which the opposition is attempting to remove the CEC.
He stated, “If opposition parties do not consider these developments as achievements, do they want elections to be conducted without peace? If they oppose such a successful electoral process, the public will not forgive them.”
JD(U) leader Saket Singh commented that since the opposition has no options left, “they are willing to go to any lengths to remove the Chief Election Commissioner.”
