Sangrur, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : A team from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) visited a village in Sangrur district on Thursday to meet the family of the late Gulzar Singh. During their visit, the team engaged in discussions with the family and assessed the government’s actions following Singh’s tragic suicide.
Opposition parties are demanding that the state’s Finance Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, along with others named in Singh’s final statement, be charged with inciting suicide. Singh had made allegations regarding rampant drug sales in his village, Tour Banjara, before his death.
Deputy Commissioner of Sangrur, Poonamdeep Kaur, stated that the family expressed satisfaction with the actions taken by the Punjab government and its officials. They noted that the promised assistance from the government is being provided. The family has already received a compensation of 500,000 rupees, and the government has assured them of a job for one family member. This information was shared with the NCSC team during their meeting.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an officer of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) rank, is conducting the investigation, ensuring strict legal action is taken.
The Deputy Commissioner mentioned that the NCSC team acknowledged the measures taken by the Punjab government and district administration. The administration provided the commission with details about the assistance offered to the family and reiterated its commitment to fully cooperate with the inquiry.
It has been reported that the district administration is dedicated to ensuring that the grieving family receives all necessary support and that the government fulfills its promises. The administration will continue to offer full cooperation to the NCSC and ensure that all subsequent actions in the case are carried out in accordance with the law.
