Mumbai, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Former Union Minister Menka Gandhi has announced the launch of the ‘Cinekind’ initiative in Mumbai, aimed at promoting animal welfare and sensitivity towards animals in Indian cinema. This initiative, in collaboration with the Film Federation of India (FFI) and People for Animals (PFA), will award 11 prizes on October 4. The goal is to encourage those in the film industry to adopt responsible behavior towards animals.
Gandhi urged the public to spread awareness about the initiative and the upcoming award ceremony. She emphasized that these awards are significant and intended to recognize efforts related to animal welfare in Indian cinema. The initiative involves prominent figures from Bollywood, as their influence can greatly affect societal attitudes and behaviors towards animals.
She highlighted the importance of involving cinema professionals in the animal welfare movement. Increased sensitivity towards animals within the film industry could lead to a broader societal impact.
Gandhi also expressed concern about the consumption of various animals in different regions of the country. She noted that this issue is not confined to Nagaland but is prevalent in various parts of India. Referring to Nagaland, she mentioned that certain animals deemed illegal for consumption are still eaten there. Citing the FSSAI’s regulations, she pointed out that animals like dogs, camels, donkeys, and horses should not be consumed, yet some areas continue this practice covertly, with Nagaland being particularly open about it.
To address these issues, Gandhi called for collective efforts and urged people to unite for animal protection. She referenced the film “Oh My Dog,” which illustrates the transportation of animals from various regions to Nagaland with police assistance, underscoring the need for collaboration on this issue.
During her address, Gandhi made a bold claim regarding the number of individuals in the country who are dedicated to feeding and protecting animals. She estimated that approximately 4.5 crore people actively engage in providing food and care for animals daily.
