Kolkata, April 4: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested Reshma Bibi, the wife of alleged drug trafficker Sheikh Munir, on Saturday in Kolkata. Approximately ₹50 crore worth of drugs were confiscated during the operation, officials reported.
Investigators conducted the raid based on specific intelligence received from the Iqbalpur area. They anticipate uncovering more information during the interrogation of Reshma.
According to officials, Sheikh Munir is considered a key member of an international drug trafficking network with links to several countries. He is currently on the run, and investigators suspect that his wife has been managing the network from their home in Iqbalpur during his absence.
The NCB stated that this operation is part of efforts to enhance surveillance and law enforcement ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. Authorities are conducting raids in various locations, particularly in border areas, to seize weapons, narcotics, and cash to maintain law and order.
Officials revealed that the agency is now investigating the network’s expansion, which includes its spread in Kolkata and surrounding areas. They are also working to identify other individuals involved and potential locations for hiding contraband.
In West Bengal, voting for 294 assembly seats will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The Election Commission has deployed observers in all assembly constituencies to ensure that the elections are conducted fairly and freely.
